MEAN WELL Power Supplies for LED Strip Lighting
If you already know your LED strip system, shortlist by documented data, not by looks. This page compares two 60W, 24V MEAN WELL candidates from their manufacturer specification sheets: the LPV-60-24 general-purpose switching power supply (2.5A rated, 86% typical efficiency) and the PWM-60-24 Blank-Type LED driver with PWM-style output (2.5A rated, 89% typical efficiency and documented 3-in-1 dimming). Neither is presented as compatible with your strip until you have verified the strip's rated voltage, load, control method and installation conditions.
Match the strip system first
This page is written for readers who already have an LED strip system and need to browse candidate power supplies for it. It compares two documented MEAN WELL candidates at the 60W / 24V level — the LPV-60-24 switching power supply and the PWM-60-24 Blank-Type LED driver — using only the manufacturer specification sheets referenced below. It is not a compatibility declaration: every model-specific statement here is sourced from the manufacturer's own documentation, and the final check against your strip, controller or dimmer datasheet is yours to perform.
Start by collecting the documentation for the system you already own. The strip label and the controller manual answer most of the questions a supplier will ask, and they determine which product route is even possible.
A quick note on scope: this page helps you compare and shortlist. If you are still deciding between a constant-voltage and a constant-current driver, read that comparison first, and use the LED driver category to browse beyond these two examples.
- The strip's rated supply voltage, exactly as printed on its label or datasheet.
- The documented power or current draw, and the total strip length you intend to run.
- The control method, if any: on/off only, an analog or PWM dimming signal, or a digital protocol such as DALI.
- The installation environment: indoors, outdoors without direct sunlight, or a location with water exposure.
- Any system-level certification or EMC obligations that apply to your final equipment.
Choose the right product route
The two candidates documented here come from different product families. The LPV-60 series is a single-output switching power supply series with a constant voltage design; the PWM-60 series is a constant voltage PWM output LED driver series whose listed applications include LED strip lighting. These are distinct products, and nothing on this page presents either one as a drop-in replacement for the other.
Both documented models happen to share the same output numbers — 24V, 2.5A, 60W — but sharing ratings does not make two products interchangeable. The difference sits in the intended function and the dimming interface, which is why your control method matters before you shortlist anything.
One manufacturer caution applies to both families: each unit is a component operated in combination with final equipment, and because EMC performance is affected by the complete installation, the final equipment manufacturer must re-qualify EMC on the complete installation again. If your application has regulatory obligations, this check belongs to your project, not to the component datasheet.
- Known 24V constant-voltage strip: shortlist 24V constant-voltage candidates first, then check each exact model.
- Dimming planned: confirm the signal type against the driver's documented dimming input before anything else.
- Uncertain load type: stop and document the strip before requesting products; do not guess an output mode.
- Driver-category browsing, including other families, is handled on the dedicated LED driver collection page.
Compare actual supply and driver options
The table below lists only values taken from the manufacturer specification sheets for the exact model numbers.
The LPV-60 series is documented as a constant voltage design, fully encapsulated with IP67 level, in a fully isolated plastic case as a Class II power unit (no FG), with short circuit, overload and over voltage protections and cooling by free air convection. The datasheet states the series is suitable for LED related fixture or appliance such as LED decoration or advertisement devices, and also states that the product is not intended for LED lighting luminaire applications in the EU and China — a boundary you must respect in regulated applications.
The PWM-60 documentation separates Blank-Type 3-in-1 dimming from DA2-Type DALI-2 control. Its documented dimming range is 0~100%, with a typical output PWM frequency of 1.47kHz for Blank-Type and 2.5kHz for DA2-Type. Match the exact type to the controller documentation; do not transfer an interface between types.
Note what the table does not say: it does not say either model suits your strip. It says what the manufacturer has documented for each exact model.
- LPV-60-24 dimming is not documented in the LPV-60 specification sheet; treat it as a non-dimming candidate unless the manufacturer documents otherwise.
- PWM-60 dimming types differ by suffix: Blank-Type and DA2-Type are separate function options, not the same product.
- Efficiency figures are typical values under the manufacturer's stated test conditions, not field measurements.
| Model | Output voltage | Rated current | Rated power | Efficiency (typ.) | Dimming documented |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LPV-60-24 | 24V | 2.5A (range 0~2.5A) | 60W | 86% | Not documented in the LPV-60 datasheet; ripple & noise max. 150mVp-p |
| PWM-60-24 (Blank-Type) | 24V | 2.5A | 60W | 89% | Blank-Type 3-in-1 dimming |
Address installation factors
Load check, by example only. To turn a strip's documented power into a current, use I = P / V. As a purely hypothetical example: if a 24V strip system has a documented total power of 36W, the current is 36W / 24V = 1.5A, which would be 60% of the LPV-60-24's 2.5A rated current. This is a worked example with assumed inputs, not a measurement of your system — substitute your own strip's documented figures.
Thermal and environment. The LPV-60 datasheet gives a working temperature of -30~+70°C with reference to the derating curve, and states the units are suitable for indoor use or outdoor use without direct sunlight exposure, avoiding immersion in water over 30 minutes. The PWM-60 installation manual asks you to keep a 10-15 cm clearance when the adjacent device is a heat source, and to make sure the temperature of the Tc point does not exceed the Tc max. identified on the product label. De-rating and mounting orientation can reduce usable output, so check the derating documentation for your exact model and conditions.
Wiring and control cautions from the manufacturer. Before commencing any installation or maintenance work, disconnect the power supply from the utility and ensure it cannot be reconnected inadvertently. For the PWM series, make sure your dimming controller is capable of driving these units; the series requires 0.15mA each unit. For PWM-60 Blank-Type, do not connect DIM- to Vo-. DA2-Type uses DA+ and DA-. These are manufacturer instructions, not a substitute for a qualified review of your mains-side installation, which must be performed by a qualified person under your local rules.
- Verify cable current ratings: the manual requires approved primary/secondary cable ratings greater than or equal to the unit's.
- An IP rating on the power supply does not make the complete installation waterproof; verify every enclosure and connection point.
- Check the derating curve for your exact model before fixing mounting orientation and ambient assumptions.
Provide documentation and a quotation route
To get a configuration that is actually checked rather than guessed, send us the strip documentation itself: the label or datasheet page showing the rated voltage and power, the total length, the control method, and the installation location. With those inputs we can confirm which documented model numbers to quote and which filters on the selection pages apply.
Use the LED driver category to browse beyond these two examples, and the constant-current versus constant-voltage guide if the output mode is still open. When you are ready, request a quote and reply to our confirmation email with your strip documentation attached — we will answer with exact model numbers, including suffix and type, so nothing is lost between datasheet and order.
Frequently asked questions
Which data from my strip label do you need?
We need the strip's rated supply voltage, the documented power or current draw, the total length you intend to run, and the control method if any. With those inputs we can compare them against documented model ratings — for example, both the LPV-60-24 and the PWM-60-24 are documented at 24V, 2.5A rated current and 60W rated power — and confirm which exact model number to quote.
Can I dim the strip with this supply?
Dimming depends on the exact model/type and the controller documentation. The PWM-60 documentation separates Blank-Type 3-in-1 dimming from DA2-Type DALI-2 control and lists a 0~100% dimming range. Its installation guidance also requires checking controller drive capability; the PWM series requires 0.15mA per unit. The LPV-60 specification does not document a dimming interface for the LPV-60-24.
Is the whole installation waterproof?
No. Both documented series are described by the manufacturer as fully encapsulated with IP67 level, and the LPV-60 sheet states suitability for indoor or outdoor use without direct sunlight exposure while avoiding immersion in water over 30 minutes. An IP rating on the power supply component does not make the complete installation waterproof: every enclosure, connector and cable entry in your system must be verified separately, per the manufacturer's installation cautions for waterproof linkage.
