Bidirectional units move energy in both directions: from the AC mains to a DC bus as a conventional supply, and from the DC bus back to the mains. That second direction is what distinguishes them from a rectifier-only supply, and it is the reason they appear in battery, storage and test systems where energy would otherwise be dissipated as heat.
